THE TRIP · Alaska

Not the original plan

The plan was an eight-hour boat ride out to Nuka Island and a week of hunting black bears there. A storm front moved in and made the trip impossible, so Jared and James hunted closer in instead.

The first two days brought driving snow, then big swells. The tide came in faster than they expected and pinned them on a narrow strip of shore, so they built a fire and dried out. On day two they never got off the boat.

That night the captain ran them out to Nuka Island. They found no bear sign, the rain shut down animal movement, and waiting it out could have stranded them for ten days. They turned around and ran eight hours back to Homer with three days left to hunt.

The group split up to cover more ground. Curtis shot a bear he spotted from about 600 yards. Its stomach was mostly grass, so they turned to glassing the hillsides.

On the last day James found a sow with a cub at almost 300 yards and called Jared over. They went back and forth for close to an hour. It was not the bear they came for, so they did not shoot. Jared and James left Alaska without a bear.
