The menace of the bait

In May 2026, Joe Griffin went north to Saskatchewan for a five-day spring bear hunt, with Jordan Parham filming. Camp sat on the Beaver River, about an hour and a half north of Saskatoon, where farm country turns into boreal forest. Some of the baits there go back to the 1970s, and the bear trails into them are worn deep.

It was Joe's first time hunting over bait for himself, and he hunted from his Latitude saddle. His first night was quiet. A wolf sounded off close by in the evening, and no bears came in.

So he moved. The new bait sat between two big log cuts, and it was busy: sows with cubs, a lone sow, and Patches, a good-sized boar who lost much of his hair to frostbite in the den. Joe saw more than a dozen bears that first evening and passed them all. When a bigger boar came in after midnight, he and Jordan climbed back in at first light.

Patches kept chasing sows and cubs off the bait. Joe finally decided to take him, and with bow in hand he did.

What we carried

  • Latitude Outdoors

    Saddle

Joe hunted from his Latitude saddle. Jordan took whatever stand was already at the bait, and the saddle let Joe pick his own tree, so there was room for a hunter and a camera.

  • Reveal by Tactacam

    Cell cameras

The outfitters run about 55 Reveal cameras and gave Joe a login before the trip, so he was watching bears on the baits from home.

  • Self-filming

Two action cameras and an arm

A DJI Action 5 and Action 6 did the self-filming. Joe hung one on a Fourth Arrow arm above him, pointed down, for the view of the shot.

    Totes

Meat was deboned and frozen. Hides were rolled with the claws and skulls in and packed in totes for the trip home.
