A January bow hunt

James had wanted to hunt bison for a long time. Most bison in the United States are managed on ranches, so he called Worldwide Trophy Adventures and set up a bow hunt on a ranch in South Dakota.

The plan was to spot from the truck, then go in on foot. The wind made everything harder. On day one a big bull came to about 45 yards, but James did not like the shot in that wind and let it pass. Later the bull showed at over 60 yards, saw him, and left. They backed out for the night.

Day two was minus 1 degree before the wind chill and about 26 below with it. A cow kept staring them down, so they looped around and used a single row of trees to close in. James's first arrow hit at 68 yards. The wind pushed his second at 62. His third, at 53 yards, went clean through.

At the butcher, they found the first arrow had cut the heart. The guide said the third shot was one of only four bow pass-throughs he had seen.

A thin 4 millimeter shaft with weight up front, so a standard 100-grain head fits. James broke only one of the arrows he shot into the bull.
